Taylor Swift Reveals Exactly What Role She Plays for Dakota Johnson After a Breakup

THE RUNDOWN

  • Dakota Johnson hosted Saturday Night Live for the third time to promote her new film, Verity.
  • Johnson joked about her recent dating history during her opening monologue.
  • Taylor Swift made a surprise appearance as Johnson’s “literal therapist.”

On October 3, Dakota Johnson hosted Saturday Night Live for the third time. Her opening monologue included cheeky jokes and a surprise Taylor Swift appearance.

At the center of her opener was Johnson playfully recalling her year in dating. “I’ve been through two very public, very lame breakups with two very awesome musicians,” she joked as she caught up with the SNL team and audience. The Verity actress last hosted the show in January 2024 and was likely referring to her 2025 split from Chris Martin and reported breakup with Role Model in 2026.

Rather than take the opportunity to fully dwell on the past, Johnson turned it into a joke about her apparent penchant for musicians. “I actually think I’m doing a public service by dating them,” she laughed, “because ladies...I am saving you a lot of money on Zoloft—so, you’re welcome, America! And also England, and parts of Ireland, and also Cleveland...allegedly,” she said, to which the “Cleveland!” singer cheered.

“Some of them don’t wear shoes, some of them are terrible in bed, but all of them are in my DMs. It’s not my fault though,” she said. “Some people leave concerts with merch, and I leave concerts with a two-and-a-half-year relationship.”

She then praised her friends for being supportive and, importantly, not judging her for the men she dates.

Then, enter Taylor Swift, who featured Johnson alongside Colin Farrell in the “Patient Zero” music video, and just so happens to be one of those friends.

“Ladies and gentleman, my literal therapist!” Johnson announced. Swift was, in turn, quick to playfully rebuke the title.

“I’m not your therapist, actually,” Swift clarified. “You just show up once a week at my house with an empty bottle of wine and ask if I want some.”

“Yeah, well I have manners,” Johnson played along.

“And then you flop on my couch and overshare,” she recalled before laying bare her approach: “Every so often I just say, ‘Damn, that’s crazy.’”

The exchange, despite being presented as a joke, is a reminder that sometimes all your friend needs from you is a judgment-free space and time to tell that story as many times as they need to—even if you have nothing to say in return.

“And then I go, ‘Oh, well, you know, it’s getting late, I should probably go to bed,’” Swift continued, “and then you say...”

“Sleepover, yay!” Johnson jumped in.

“And then I give you a Pedialyte,” Swift smiled before patting her on the shoulder, “and my security drives you home.”
