These property sectors in Singapore could take a hit from the JS-SEZ, analysts say

WHILE some industries in Singapore, such as banks and gaming, are poised to benefit from the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), this may not be the case for some industries.

Fears that the SEZ may hurt certain industries in Singapore were raised in Parliament this week, with Member of Parliament Saaktiandi Supaat flagging that the local transport and logistics sector might be affected by Malaysian logistics entering Singapore.

Minister of State for Trade and Industry Alvin Tan responded, saying that the government is aware of concerns that it might hurt certain industries and is monitoring the impact.

One of them could be a segment of the property sector – industrial, while retail could see some limited impact, some market watchers told The Business Times.

Wong Xian Yang, Cushman & Wakefield’s head of research in Singapore and South-east Asia, noted that the largest implications would likely be for the industrial sector.
