Suddenly, Every Fashion Person Is Wearing the Sweater Trend That Was Considered Ugly Not That Long Ago

Listen. I know some trends come back around that you may think are flat-out ugly. Skinny jeans, for instance, will never get an approving look from me. With winter swiftly reintroducing sweater weather, the season is making way for yet another trend that was previously deemed irrevocably ugly: argyle-print sweaters.

The print was first introduced in the 17th century and is associated with Scotland’s Clan Campbell of Argyll, one of the Highlands’ most powerful clans. It’s renowned for its distinctive diamond-shaped geometric pattern. It was then popularized in the 20th century by the luxury fashion brand Pringle of Scotland’s take on the print, notably in the golfing world. Now, it’s a fan favorite among the fashion crowd. Argyle print is all over my Instagram feed and was even featured on Khaite’s runway. Models sported argyle-print sweaters with undeniably chic styling not just once but twice for fall/winter 2025 and spring/summer 2026. It’s safe to say the trend will be sticking around into the New Year.
