Instead a prefer to opt for a quietly brilliant, lightweight perfume. The thing is, when it comes to the best perfumes ever, a lot of them can be quite intense.
That’s why I’ve made it my mission to find the best lightweight, rich-smelling perfumes on the market that aren’t overwhelming. I can’t guarantee that each one of these is a fragrance suitable for headache sufferers, but what I can say is that these lightweight scents settle beautifully on the skin and envelop the senses with a fresh, sparkling aroma that I never get sick of.

What Notes to Look for in a Lightweight Perfume
Before we get into my edit, I spoke to Chriselle Lim, founder of popular fragrance brand, Phlur, to find out more about choosing a lightweight perfume. First up, the notes. “For a lightweight perfume, I always recommend notes that feel airy, fresh and effortless on the skin,” says Lim. “Skin-like musks seamlessly blend with your natural chemistry, creating a scent that feels uniquely yours while enhancing your own essence.”
Alongside musk, I also look for light, fruity and floral notes such as peach or jasmine, as these can add a soft touch to any fragrance.
Do Lightweight Perfumes Last?
One thing I was conscious about when choosing a lightweight perfume was whether it would last as well as my more intense options, as the notes are often a lot more subtle. It turns out, they can make good long-lasting perfume options. “Lightweight perfumes can have lasting power, but they wear a little differently than deeper, more intense fragrances,” explains Lim. “Instead of making a bold statement right away, they tend to meld with your skin, creating a scent that feels more personal or intimate. First up is the fragrance that took TikTok by storm a few years ago. As the name suggests, this scent from Phlur has been designed to remind you of someone you love, and it’s a beautifully warm, lightweight perfume that delicately lingers on the skin.
It opens with notes of skin-like musk and fresh bergamot, before drying down to a base of sandalwood and white musk. To me, it smells like a freshly washed cashmere jumper that I want to nuzzle into all day long.

If skin-like scents are your thing, then I’m sure you’ve already heard of Glossier You. If not, then let me introduce you. I would describe it as you, but on a really good day. It’s soft, powdery, warm and comforting, with a sparkling top note of pink pepper that adds an intoxicating touch.

Byredo recently released an alcohol-free version of the popular Mojave Ghost scent, and it’s definitely a more delicate, lightweight iteration for those of you who want something more subtle. Yes, it might not last as long, but it’s so good that I don’t mind topping it up throughout the day.
The woody fragrance has a fresh yet warming aroma, and spritzing it feels like wrapping yourself up in a fluffy cotton towel straight out of the shower. Powdery violet is grounded by a base of sandalwood, cedar and musk, and I always get compliments whenever I spritz this.

This might sound like an oxymoron, but this is the most powerful lightweight fragrance that I have ever come across. It smells just like a fresh basket of laundry and has an incredible scent projection that lasts all day. It’s so good, in fact, that beauty director Shannon Lawlor has predicted it will be one of the most popular perfumes of 2025.
It contains a beautiful concoction of light, airy notes such as peach, aldehydes and sandalwood. It’s very powdery but not in an old-fashioned kind of way. In fact, I’d say it’s an incredibly modern take on a fresh, lightweight perfume and I’m yet to smell anything else like it.
5. Chanel Chance Eau Tendre

Possibly my favourite delicate designer scent on the market is this Chanel perfume. Chanel’s Chance Eau Tendre is a perfect everyday perfume for those of you who don’t like anything too intense. It’s a gorgeous, fruity floral fragrance and I’m yet to meet anyone who doesn’t like it.
Notes of powdery rose mingle with soft jasmine and smooth white musk, while a hint of grapefruit adds a zingy, citrusy touch. If you’re looking for a new scent this spring, I highly recommend giving this a go.

Yes, this fragrance is designed to smell just like a fresh, crisp sheet of paper. It’s a lightweight, musky, hazy scent with a milky, creamy base of rice steam accord. I actually love layering this Diptyque fragrance with other scents as I find that it really amplifies those creamy, musky notes.
It’s definitely more of a complex perfume and although it’s subtle, I can still smell this on my skin after a long day at work.

Okay, this is easily one of my most complimented fragrances of all time. It’s like heaven in a bottle, with a soft, fresh and musky aroma that lingers beautifully on the skin and makes you smell so expensive.
It’s one of those fragrances that you can’t quite put a finger on, as although it’s fresh, it’s not airy like other lightweight scents. Instead, it has this complex depth that keeps you coming back again and again.
8. Loewe 001 Woman

Loewe fragrances are the epitome of luxury, and although there are plenty of punchy scents to choose from, 001 Woman would be my top recommendation if you are looking for something more lightweight.
It’s a super wearable scent with base notes of fresh linen and warming musk. However, it opens with subtle hints of mandarin and bergamot which give it this sparkly, refreshing aroma that makes me feel invigorated whenever I spritz it.

This perfume has been in my collection for as long as I can remember, and I love reaching for it in the spring and summer months when I want something light but delicious. I will say that the lasting power isn’t the best, but I like layering it with the matching body cream for even more impact.

While notes of lily bring a clean, crisp element to the fragrance, a base of precious woods bring an earthy element that adds subtle warmth. It’s completely timeless and perfect for those of you looking for something soft and delicate.
