Rushing to prevent a Christmastime government shutdown, House Speaker Mike Johnson scrambled Wednesday to salvage a stopgap measure to keep federal offices running despite an onslaught of opposition from hard-right conservatives led by President-elect Donald Trump -ally Elon Musk.
