Schumer says ‘sickening events have become far too normal’ after weekend shootings

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Sunday that “sickening events have become far too normal” following recent shootings, including at Brown University in Rhode Island and in Sydney, Australia.

“The Jewish people have been collectively demonized — increasingly so in the last few years — and this tragedy in Sydney shows the abject danger of letting antisemitic rhetoric and action go unchecked. Our collective humanity demands that we come together, no matter our race or religion, and forcefully rebuke the forces that have led to this moment and left our society so divided,” Schumer said in a statement obtained by The Hill’s sister network NewsNation.

“On the heels of a tragic shooting here at home at Brown University, our hearts are extremely heavy this morning. These sickening events have become far too normal in our world. We must do more to stop gun violence, including congressional action on gun safety reforms. We must reject antisemitism and hate of all kinds, wherever it rears its head,” he added.

Schumer’s Senate colleague, Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.), on Sunday said the fatal Brown shooting “shook” the Ocean State.

In a Saturday shooting at the Ivy League school, two students were killed and nine were wounded, officials said. A person of interest has been detained, according to Providence, R.I., Police Department Chief Oscar Perez.

On Sunday in Australia, there was a mass shooting during a Hanukkah celebration at Sydney’s Bondi Beach. New South Wales Premier Chris Minns said during a press conference Monday “that 16 people have been confirmed as being killed, 15 innocent people and one perpetrator.”

“There are 42 people in New South Wales hospitals overnight, and the victims’ age ranges are from as young as 10 to 87, a devastating fact,” he added.
