Rihanna Has a Very Rihanna Take on 2016 Fashion
What were you wearing in 2016? Skinny jeans, bomber jackets, a lace slip, backless loafers? Rihanna was the driving force behind many a Forever 21 haul: it was the year of ANTI, and Rih had established a strong sense of style that leaned into the eras most memorable aesthetics. Often, you’d catch her in oversized-hoodies and statement, embellished denim, sporty co-ords, and edgy tailoring. Last night in New York, Rihanna embraced 2016 style again—with her own contemporary twist.
The pop star and beauty mogul headed out on the evening of her partner A$AP Rocky’s album release day, wearing a look that spoke both to the mid-10s and the freezing temperatures. Rih opted for an oversized charcoal gray wool blazer with strong lapels over another navy blazer, and a blue and Vaquera collared shirt. On the bottom, she wore a pair of Balenciaga knife pants and pointed white pumps, all styled with a black leather clutch bag, a layered Bryony Raymond diamond and god necklace, and black-out aviator style sunglasses. From the shades to the leggings and the cubicle-to-club vibe, the nostalgia for a bygone style era hit hard.

Just a day previous, Rihanna also wore another 2016-coded look, sporting an amber colored silk satin slip dress by Saint Laurent with a cropped olive green Miu Miu bomber jacket to attend A$AP’s launch party. Who didn’t love a silky dress toughened up with more masculine bit of outerwear in 2016? Last week, too, Rih toted a Jeremy Scott Longchamps Le Pliage bag featuring a tightly cropped Madballs monster—a rare but hard to forget accessory from the same decade.
