Pete Alonso Likely To Re-Sign With Mets After Yankees Land Paul Goldschmidt

The New York Yankees finally found their replacement for former Chicago Cubs World Series champion Anthony Rizzo at first base on Saturday.

Five-time Silver Slugger Paul Goldschmidt signed a one-year, $12.5 million deal with the Yankees, eliminating four-time All-Star Pete Alonso from consideration for the Bronx Bombers.

Now that the Yankees have filled their void at first base, the New York Mets have emerged as front runners to re-sign Alonso this offseason.

Although other clubs, such as the Washington Nationals could use an upgrade at first base, the odds of Alonso signing anywhere other than either New York team have been slim all offseason.

Alonso is exploring the free-agent market for the first time in his six-year career. His projected market value is roughly $242 million over a seven-year deal, according to Spotrac.

Despite Mets owner Steven Cohen recently inking superstar outfielder Juan Soto to a record-setting $765 million contract, the multi-billionaire should have no issue outbidding other teams for Alonso.

With former Arizona Diamondbacks four-time Gold Glove defender Christian Walker and Goldschmidt off the table, re-signing Alonso seems like the best option for the Mets.

If the Mets would rather spend less for a new first baseman, they could choose Rizzo or former Minnesota Twins slugger Carlos Santana.

However, Cohen is determined to win a World Series title for Queens, which would be the third in franchise history. Retaining Mets fan favorite Alonso could be crucial.
