Major railway line in Poland damaged by sabotage, says prime minister
A major railway line in Poland has been damaged by sabotage, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Monday.
The tracks on the route from the capital Warsaw to the eastern city of Lublin were destroyed by an explosive device, Tusk wrote on X.
A second instance of damage was discovered on the same line further east.
The background to the incident remains unclear. The public prosecutor’s office and the secret service are investigating.
On Sunday morning, the driver of a train travelling from Dęblin in Lublin province to Warsaw noticed a badly damaged section of track near the village of Życzyn.
He alerted the control centre, which then temporarily suspended train services on the section of the line. Neither passengers nor train crew were injured, reported the PAP agency.
Polish authorities have warned of the threat from Russian sabotage due to Warsaw’s support for Ukraine.
The railway network is considered a target, as many Western military deliveries to Ukraine pass through Poland.
Last year, the Polish government blamed Russian intelligence services for a major fire in a shopping centre in Warsaw.
In October, eight people were arrested on charges of planning acts of sabotage and espionage.
