Germany to spend €35 billion on space security by 2030

Germany is set to spend a total of €35 billion ($41 billion) on space security architecture by 2030, Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said on Thursday.

The aim is to establish a resilient system consisting of satellites, ground stations, secure launch capabilities and related services, he said.

The plan is for the investments to guarantee “both protection and effectiveness.”

“We are strengthening our systems against disruptions and attacks,” Pistorius said, explicitly pointing to “cyber security for all space systems.”

Situation awareness in orbit is to be improved by radars, telescopes
and the future use of sentry satellites, according to the minister.

Pistorius stressed that offensive capabilities must also be discussed.

Germany “must also be able to deter in space” in order to defend itself, Pistorius said.
