Controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation ceases operations
The controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), supported by the US and Israel, is finally ending its mission in the Gaza Strip, six weeks after the start of the ceasefire there.
After distributing more than 187 million meals to residents of the coastal strip, the foundation is ceasing its work, it announced on Monday.
“We have succeeded in our mission of showing there’s a better way to deliver aid to Gazans,” GHF Executive Director John Acree said.
According to the statement, the foundation has been in talks for several weeks with international organizations and the US-led Civil-Military Coordination Centre (CMCC) in southern Israel, which is responsible for monitoring the ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian militant organization Hamas.
The GHF began its mission in the sealed-off coastal area in May after an almost three-month Israeli blockade of aid deliveries.
At the time, Israel accused Hamas of stealing humanitarian aid. The GHF was intended as a means of circumventing this, as well as an alternative to other aid groups that Israel is critical of.
GHF said in its statement that not a single aid truck belonging to the foundation was looted during the entire four-and-a-half-month operation.
However, there were repeated reports of fatal incidents near the distribution points operated by the GHF.
